Urban Silk layers up leisurewear styles starting with the basics, the Sleeveless Hooded Top and Skinny Black Pant

Top 5 Ways To Boost Your Winter Style

I'm loving the change of season! After a long, hot summer I've been waiting for the change to come and I'm excited to be digging out my leisurewear winter warmers from the depths of the closet.

As a Brit on the Gold Coast, I thrive in winter and while generally the Queensland sunshine forces me to strip off by lunchtime, come the evening chiIl I’ll still be snuggled up with my winter warmers, a glass of red wine and bowl full of comfort food.

Europeans in general (and I'm speaking way beyond myself here) are well-practiced at dressing for winter and are very good at it. They’re always worth a reference when looking for winter style inspiration. But to save you time on your style journey, here’s a European’s top 5 Ways To Maximise Your Winter Layering Style…

Layer Top Over Top
Layers bring warmth with versatility. As the base for a layered look, I’ll start with a slim-fit sleeveless top like the Urban Silk Sleeveless Hooded Top and add a fine knit cardigan or long-sleeved top then build up layers from there. For cold mornings, I’d even add an oversized cardigan under an outwear jacket and scarf.

Look for loose-fitting jackets and cardigans that can be layered over further layers of your outfit for the chilly morning commute.

Go for a slim silhouette for the lower body to balance the weight of your layers. Choose slim-line pants like Urban Silk's Skinny Black Pant or a slender pencil skirt (try the Urban Silk Cylinder Skirt which you can vary in length) to streamline the look.

Vary the lengths of your different layers to stop the silhouette looking bulky.

Texture
With layers comes texture - the wider your variety of styles and weights of clothing, the greater the range of fibres and weaves. And with that play comes true winter luxury.

A chunky knit contrasted with the Urban Silk slinky jersey, skintight leather played against silky sheers, tweeds versus lace, brocades and furs - winter textures are all about opulence.

Mix and match and take pleasure in embracing as many as possible.

Boots
Boots were not designed to go unnoticed. Wrapping the legs, they stand proud so make the most of their statement-making potential. Brown and tan shades give a heritage/boho twist while black keeps the look urban slick. Ankle boots wear pattern well, or opt for a flash of bold colour to communicate your contemporary daring.

Big Bags
With chunky knits and layered looks boosting the silhouettes, big bags are a must to bring to an outfit. Include a textured finish such as a crocodile skin, hide or suede effects and you’ve added another texture to your ensemble as well.

Handbags should be big enough to fit a scarf and an umbrella if not a hot water bottle as well! (The must-have capsule contents of my handbags are a story for another blog post!)

Investment Buys
With fabrics traditionally thicker for winter, they are by nature longer laster than summer’s offerings. Make the most of the season to invest in tailored pieces and structured silhouettes in quality fabrics that really will last a lifetime. Urban Silk's luxurious jersey is of course, timeless and well worth the investment too!
